Custom made to measure
Mermaid and fit-and-flare wedding dresses
A mermaid wedding dress is fitted through the bodice, waist and hips and flares out at or below the knee. A fit-and-flare (or trumpet) dress follows the same idea but flares higher, around mid-thigh, so it is easier to move in. Both are made to your measurements at Lace & Liberty, which matters for a close-fitting silhouette.

Mermaid & Fit-and-Flare Wedding Dresses: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a mermaid and a fit-and-flare wedding dress?
Both hug the body through the hips. A mermaid dress stays fitted to around the knee before flaring dramatically, while a fit-and-flare (trumpet) dress flares from around mid-thigh for a softer shape and more movement.
Will a made-to-measure mermaid dress still need alterations?
Usually a little. Made to measure means your dress is made in your own proportions and height rather than cut from a standard size chart, which reduces alterations but does not eliminate them. Plan to receive your dress 12–16 weeks before the wedding. See how to take your measurements.
Can I customize a mermaid wedding dress from your collection?
Yes. Every dress is made in your own measurements and proportions. Based on any existing design we can change the neckline shape, choose a different lining color, add removable sleeves and straps, add support, specify the train length and more.
How much does a custom mermaid wedding dress cost?
Lace & Liberty custom gowns range from $1,500 to $5,500, and most brides spend $2,000–$3,500. Customizations to an existing collection design start at $250. Get a personalized number with our price estimate.
How long does it take to make a custom mermaid wedding dress?
Our standard turnaround is about 6 months from the date you order, including consultations, design finalization, production edits and shipping. Rush options of 18, 12 or 8 weeks ($250, $450 or $600) may be available depending on our production schedule and fabric availability. See timing & rush orders.
